Castleford Secondary School, Healdfield Road. Art Class
In March 1908 the foundation stone for Castleford Secondary School was laid. Mr T.R. Dawes was the first headmaster and had been involved in the planning of the building, which was to cost £14000. In a history “Castleford Grammar School 1906/7-1956/7” the development of the school, from its first premises in Wheldon Road is recorded. Reference is made to school life, the staff who served there and pupils who became ‘someone’. The best known of these was artist and sculptor Henry Moore, who was greatly encouraged by Miss Alice Gostick, the art mistress at Castleford Secondary School to develop his talent. An oak plaque carved by Henry Moore commemorates former pupils who died in WW1. Originally built to accommodate 300 pupils the school, currently named Castleford High School Technology College currently has 1260 pupils.
