Featherstone High School

Former Prime Minister Sir Harold Wilson officially opened Featherstone High School on 9th July 1976. Local press reported that the school was to be very modern and would usher in a new era of education in Featherstone. A Featherstone born man, Mr Douglas Booth aged 56 was appointed the first head teacher of the school. He believed the school would be “something unique, consisting mainly of the children of Featherstone parents. How it develops and the image which it presents depends upon what all of us in Featherstone, young and old together, make of this fine opportunity.” At the opening of the school Sir Harold Wilson praised the introduction of comprehensive education in Featherstone. He inspired pupils and said that “generation after generation the traditions they started would be honoured and respected by those who followed them.”
