Wakefield at Work

Bagleys Glassworks, Knottingley

Once the most successful glassworks in the country, it was founded in 1871 by William Bagley and his partners, to produce glass bottles  In 1912 the company began producing crystal and pressed glass for domestic use in addition to glass bottles.  Lead crystal was made for a short time but apart from the war years Bagleys were major producers of pressed glass.  In the 1930s they introduced decorative glass with the trademark “Crystaltynt”, making ornamental items for domestic use in various colours in frosted and transparent designs.  During the Second World War they supplied NAAFI with beer glasses for the armed forces.  In 1975 they were taken over by Jackson Glass of Knottingley, who are now part of the Rockware Group
