The Cliffe Tree was planted in the estate of Cliffe Hill by a member of the Maude family but was blown down in 1845 by a gale. The house was later owned by Henry Clarkeson who wrote 'Memories of Merry Wakefield' in 1887. The hall was demolished at the end of World War II.
