Listed Buildings and protected sites

What is a Listed Building?

Listed Buildings are historic buildings and structures that are protected by law because of their historic importance. If you want to make physical changes to a Listed Building this will usually require planning permission and Listed Building Consent. If you need advice on this, please get in touch with Wakefield Council’s conservation team.

If you want to find out more about a Listed Building, or check if a building is listed, you can search the list. The ‘List’ is a national database of all protected historic sites and buildings that is hosted by Historic England. Historic England also has a lot of useful information on its website about the different protections for historic places, and what this means for owners and others.

West Yorkshire Historic Environment Record (HER)

Another great resource, including for archaeological sites, is the West Yorkshire Historic Environment Record (HER), hosted by West Yorkshire Archaeological Advisory Service (WYAAS). The HER includes records of all the known historical sites in West Yorkshire, historic mapping, and records of previous archaeological fieldwork.

A version of the HER can also be searched online on the national Heritage Gateway, but for the most up to date information it is recommended that you make an appointment to visit the WYAAS offices in Morley, Leeds.
