Charles William Armitage enlisted at Leeds and served with the “B” Company, 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own).
On 30th June 1916, Fricourt village was just within the German front line. It was attacked on 1st July by the 17th Division and by the end of the day it was caught between that division to the west, the 21st to the north and the 7th to the south. The village was occupied by the 17th Division the following day.
Charles William Armitage died, aged 21, on 1st July 1916 and is buried at Fricourt New Military Cemetery E 1.
Family Life
He was born in 1893, the son of Maskill Armitage and Ada Stathers, who married in the third quarter of 1887 and their marriage was registered at Pontefract.
In the 1911 census he is shown as a Miner living at 6, Warrington Row, Station Road, Kippax with his father and sibling.
