“Official information has been received by Mrs Barber of Denwell Terrace, Pontefract, that her husband Private Fred Barber was killed in action on April 9th. The deceased soldier, who was 36, was very well known in Pontefract and the district. He was a sculptor-mason in the employ of Councillor Spurr. Some ten months ago he joined the Royal Engineers and later was attached to the Northumberland Fusiliers. After training in England he went to France in January last, where he has bravely laid down his life for his country. Much sympathy is felt for his widow and six children. A sister of the deceased was recently killed in a munition works explosion.”
Extract taken from the Pontefract and Castleford Express 18th May 1917.
He is buried at Roclincourt Valley Cemetery.
