War Service

George Brown enlisted at Ferrybridge and became a Private with the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment service number 39252. He died of his wounds aged 22 on 21st September 1918 and is buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt Plot V Row F Grave 31. He is also recorded on a memorial stone with his parents in Ferrybridge Municipal Cemetery.

Family Life

George Brown was born on 11th March 1896, the son of Tom and Lily Shaw, who married on 26th March 1894 at St Andrew’s Church, Ferrybridge. In the 1911 census he is shown to be a Grocer’s Assistant, living at Lingard’s Buildings, Ferrybridge with his parents and siblings.
