George King was a Private in the Pioneer Corps when he died on 13th February 1941 age 40. He was buried in Knottingley Cemetery on 18th February 1941 - grave 5603.
He was killed at Montrose when a German plane dropped a land or parachute mine, the largest air dropped ordinance in use by the Luftwaffe at that time. He had been billeted at 1 Hudson Square and died of multiple injuries in the Royal Infirmary.

“KILLED BY MINE
The funeral took place at Knottingley on Tuesday of Pte George King, of the Pioneer Corps, and of 6 Southfield Road, England Lane, Knottingley, who lost his life with others, in the explosion of an enemy mine which had been washed up in Scotland. Private King, who was born at Smeaton, worked for 18 years at the Ackton Hall Colliery, and until some four years ago, lived in Pontefract. He joined the Army during the Great War at the age of 17 and served throughout that war.”

George King was born in 1901, the son of Edward King and Helen (nee Woodcock). They had married in the fourth quarter of 1893 and their marriage was registered at Pontefract.
In the second quarter of 1923 George married Eliza Oldham and this was registered at Pontefract.
