Harry Hobman was on board the destroyer HMS Kashmir when it was bombed and sunk on 23rd May 1941 by German Stuka dive bombers south of Crete, during the defence of Crete. They had already suffered several heavy air attacks and after being hit, HMS Kashmir sank in 2 minutes. He was among a total of 80 casualties listed “missing, presumed killed”. He was aged 36. As no known grave is known for him he is listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Panel 46 Column 3.
Family Life
Harry Hobman was born on 27th February 1914 and baptised on 26th March 1914 at St Botolph’s Church, Knottingley. He was the son of William and Dinah Hobman (nee Longbottom). They had married at Holbeck and this was registered in the fourth quarter of 1903.
