He enlisted in the 253rd Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers. He was killed in action on 27th September 1917 age 27. He is remembered with honour at the Mendinghem Military Cemetery.
The Wakefield Express of 27.10.1917 reported in its Roll of Honour:
HAWKINS
In loving memory of our loving and affectionate brother Sapper Herbert Hawkins Royal Engineers, of Crofton who was killed September 27th 1917 somewhere in France.
Fondly we loved him
He is dear to us still
But in our grief we must bend
To God’s holy will
