War Service

Herbert was with the 278 Siege Battery R.G.A. in France and Belgium and joined up in 1915. He was at the third battle of Ypres. He was gassed severely in 1918 and sent to Etaples Military Hospital and then the Southern general in Birmingham. He spent 61 days in hospital before being sent to 535 Siege Battery, Lydd, Kent for coastal defence. He was demobbed in 1919.

Family Life

Herbert was born in Castleford in 1891, the son of Joseph and Mary Ann nee Wilson. He married Ethel Mabel Powell in Castleford in 1915. He was a joiner and an insurance agent before and after the First World War. They had six children and my grandmother Margery was born in 1920.
