Born and brought up in Crofton, Joseph was the middle one of five children. There were three boys and two girls. Their parents were George and Sophia Gamble.
Joseph went to school in Crofton, left at age fourteen and went down the pit. He joined the Territorial Army when he was old enough.
Joseph was of medium height, about five feet six or seven, with light brown hair and blue/grey eyes. He is remembered by his sister as a kindly older brother who played with and teased his little sister.
Joseph was called up with the Territorials in 1939 and served in the Middle East with the “Desert Rats”. He was invalided home to the United Kingdom, to await his discharge on medical grounds and was posted to a Military Hospital at Morpeth.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission confirm that Joseph is buried at Berwick-upon-Tweed Cemetery in Northumberland and that the date of his death was 24th August 1944 and he was 30 years of age.
