War Service

Leonard Pickersgill was Lance Sergeant 833722 in the Royal Artillery 16th Battery 2nd H A A Regiment. Aged only 27 he was serving in Greece when he lost his life sometime between 26th and 27th April 1941. He is remembered on the Athens Memorial.

Family Life

Leonard was the son of Walter and Florence Pickersgill (nee Wood) who were living in Shaw’s Buildings, Kirkhamgate in 1911 with Walter’s occupation listed as a coal hewer. Walter and Florence had two children born in Kirkhamgate – Gladys (b 1909) and Doris (b 1912), before the family moved to Tadcaster where Leonard (b 1914) and his brother David (b 1916) were born. They returned home to Kirkhamgate at some point before daughter Ivy’s birth in 1922 and in the 1939 Register were living at 6, West View, Kirkhamgate with Walter listed as a coal getter.
