Walter was born in Crofton and baptised at Crofton Church on 12th August 1897. His father’s occupation was a carter.
He enlisted at Wakefield in the 2nd / 1st (Bucks Batt) Oxford & Buckinghamshire Regiment when he was a resident of Carcroft, Yorkshire.
The Wakefield Express for 14th April 1917, in the “Roll of Honour” says:
“In loving memory of our dear brother Private W L Hartley, Buckingham Light Infantry, late of Crofton, who died on active service somewhere in France 12th March 1917, aged 21.” There is a photograph of Walter in that edition of the Wakefield Express. He is commemorated on a family grave in All Saints, Crofton churchyard.
He is remembered at Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres.
