23112 Private W Penney appears on the Memorial in Crofton Church spelt “Penny” but the Cock and Crown Memorial has it correctly spelt. Walter was born in Sheffield but enlisted into the 2nd Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment at Wakefield. He was killed in action in France / Flanders 25th September 1916. This information was verified by a relative who has Walter’s medals.
He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial.
