War Service

William A Dobson served with the Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps - 12th (10th Battalion Green Howards [Yorkshire Regiment]}. He died on 6th June 1944 during the D Day landings, as part of Operation Overlord. He is buried at Ranville Churchyard, France - grave 34.

“KILLED ON D DAY
Mr & Mrs Dobson of 15 Pinders Crescent, Ferrybridge have been officially notified that their 3rd son Pte William Arthur Dobson of Parachute Regiment was killed in Normandy on the Invasion Day. Pte Dobson who was 26 had been in the army about 4 years and served in Iceland. Before he joined the Army, he was at Jackson Glassworks, Knottingley. A memorial service is to be held on Sunday in the Fishergate Methodist Church of which he was a member.”

William Arthur Dobson was born in the third quarter of 1918 and his birth was registered at Pontefract. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Dobson nee Lindley. They had married in the first quarter of 1907 and their marriage was registered at Pontefract.
