Private Ryder served in the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s and was killed in action on 18th April 1915. He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
From the Wakefield Express 26.2.1916:
“A CROFTON SOLDIER’S DEATH
News has been received at High Street, Crofton of the death in action of Private W Ryder of the Duke of Wellington Regiment. Joining the forces at the outbreak of the war he took part in the battle of Mons and in March 1915 he was reported missing. Prior to war he was employed at the Middleton Colliery.”
