Charles enlisted as a Private in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry with the service number 32943. He died on 18th November 1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
Family Life
Charles was born on 17th November 1895 to John Balham (who’s parents were Robert and Mary Ann Balham nee Blomfield) and Sarah Amy Balham. Her parents were Robert and Charlotte Naphen nee Leggett.
His siblings were Florence, Alice (who married Horace Tomlinson), John Robert (who married Elizabeth Taylor), Susannah (who married Ernest Osborne), Walter (who married Hannah Higgins), Edith (who married William Tomlinson), Elsie (who married William Mason and later married William Huggitt), Jessie (who married Joe Backhouse) and Lily (who married Albert Thomas Twite).
In the 1901 Census the family were living at Weeland Road, Knottingley and by the time of the 1911 Census they had moved to Chapel Street, Knottingley.
