Matthew James was a Company Sergeant Major in “B” Company, 2nd Battalion the York and Lancaster Regiment when he died on 21st September 1916. He was aged 35. He was buried at Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte, France.

Matthew James was born in 1881 to Thomas and Annie Aithwaite nee James of Thornaby-on-Tees. Their other children were Rachel Ellen and Benjamin Arthur. He married Margaret Mary and they had two children, Margaret Mary and Thomas Frederick.
