“MILITARY MEDAL WINNER
It is announced that the Military Medal has been awarded to Corporal Desmond Warren, Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, for distinguished service on the North West Front. Corporal Warren is the son of Mr and Mrs C Warren, and grandson of late Mr George Warren, The Mill, Ferrybridge, and of Mrs J Lingard of Ferry bridge. The citation states: “The section commander of a leading company being killed, Corporal Warren led his section forward at the double against an enemy post 100 yards away, bayoneting five Germans and capturing six and two machine guns. He re-organised his section and shortly after was counter attacked. Withholding his fire until the enemy were within about 20 yards, he then opened fire, killing a number and forcing the remainder to retreat, where another section took them prisoner. Throughout the action his initiative and example were an inspiration to his platoon, and at a critical moment prevented the enemy from gaining any success whatsoever.””
