George Henry Thorpe enlisted as a Private in the 1/6th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) with the service number 52480. He died on 25th April 1918 and is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 42 to 47.

Family Life

George Henry Thorpe was born in 1890 at Castleford. He was the son of Fred Thorpe and Sarah Ann Thorpe nee Hardcastle. They had married in the first quarter of 1879 and their marriage was registered at Pontefract.
After her husband’s death Sarah Ann Thorpe re-married Thomas William Foster in the second quarter of 1901 and this marriage was registered at Pontefract.
In the 1911 census George is shown as a Potter Placer, living at Doncaster Road, Ferrybridge with his stepfather, mother and siblings.
George Henry Thorpe married Emma Rowlinson in the second quarter of 1913 and their marriage was registered at Pontefract.
