George Wilfred Tennant served with the 145th (8th Battalion Duke of Wellington) Regiment. He died on 2nd September 1944 age 32 and was buried at Coriano Ridge War Cemetery, Italy - Grave XII.C.7.

“KILLED IN ITALY
Mrs M Tennant of 26 Clarendon Street, Wakefield has been informed by the War Office that her husband George Wilfred Tennant (32) of the Royal Army Corps has been killed in action whilst serving in Italy and has been buried at Monte Luro. Prior to enlistment in 1940 was employed by the LMS C & W Dept Knottingley and Wakefield. The youngest son of Mr William Henry Tennant and the late Mrs Tennant of Ferrybridge. He married in 1940 the youngest daughter of Mrs and Late Mr Eli Hoyle of Wakefield. He leaves a widow and daughter of two and a half years.”

“A MEMORIAL SERVICE
To Trooper G W Tennant whose death in action was reported in “The Express” September 22nd was held at the Doncaster Road Methodist Church, Ferrybridge, on Sunday. Trooper Tennant, whose wife lives at Clarendon Street, Wakefield, was the youngest son of Mr W H Tennant of Magnet Inn Yard, Ferrybridge. Before he went to live in Wakefield he was a Member of the Doncaster Road Methodist Church and a Sunday School teacher. The largely attended service was conducted by Mr F Mason of Pontefract.”

Family Life

George W Tennant was born in the third quarter of 1912 and his birth was registered at Tadcaster. He was the son of William Henry Tennant and Ann Maria (nee Knott) who had married in the first quarter of 1896 at Cannock.
In the second quarter of 1940, registered at Pontefract, he married Mary Hoyle and they had one daughter, Dorothy M born in the second quarter of 1942.
