War Service

Herbert Johnson served with 6th Battalion Cameronian (Scottish Rifles) and he died on 9th March 1945, age 20. He is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
The 6th Battalion were deployed to France as part of the 156 Infantry Brigade in the 52nd (Lowland) Infantry Division, to provide cover for the withdrawal of troops of the BEF after the Normandy landings in June 1944. The Battalion took part in the North West Europe Campaign in late 1944 and in 1945.

“KILLED IN ACTION
Rifleman Herbert Johnson, Cameron Highlanders, the youngest son of Mr B Johnson of 24 Pinders Crescent, Ferrybridge and the late Mrs Johnson has been killed in Western Europe and his father has been notified that he is buried at Issum near Geldern in the Rhineland. He was 20 and went to France on D Day. Rifleman Johnson was educated at Ferrybridge Council School and worked at Jackson’s Glassworks, Knottingley before he was called up two years ago. Another brother Ben Johnson is serving in Italy.”

Family Life

Herbert Johnson was born in the fourth quarter of 1924 and his birth was registered at Pontefract. He was the son of Benjamin Johnson and Mary nee Johnson, who had married on 5th July 1915 at St Andrews Church, Ferrybridge.
