War Service

John was a Private in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, serving in the 5th Battalion. He died on 26th December 1915 aged 35 and was buried at Hospital Farm Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. His mother had already died by this time.
Hospital Farm was the name given to a farm building used as a dressing station. The cemetery was used particularly in 1915 and in 1917 by regiments and batteries engaged in the fighting around Ypres.

Family information

John Ashton was born in 1880 to parents William and Catherine Ashton of Smythe Street, Pontefract. In1911 he was working as a pony driver and had siblings Mary and William.
