War Service

The www.roll-of-honour.com shows that John enlisted at Pontefract as a Private, service number 15712, in the 10th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. He died aged 44 on 26th September 1915 and his name is recorded on the Loos Memorial Pas de Calais, France, Panel 105 & 106. The Loos memorial commemorates over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave, who fell in the area from the River Lys to the old southern boundary of the First Army, east and west of Grenay, from the first day of the Battle of Loos to the end of the war.
John is also recorded on a memorial stone on the site of the old church burial ground at Ferrybridge as “lost at Battle of Loos Sep 26th 1915 aged 44 years.”

Family Life

John Lingard was born on 10th May 1871 at Willingham, Lincolnshire and was the son of William and Fanny Lingard nee Coupland. They had married on 15th October 1867 at Claxby Parish Church. William came to Ferrybridge in the 1870’s as the village Police Constable.
John Lingard married Elizabeth Draper on 9th November 1895 at St Andrew’s Church, Ferrybridge and they had at least 8 children. In the 1911 census he was a By-worker in a mine, living at Station Road, Ferrybridge with his wife and children.
