Private John William Sinfield (or William Sinfield as he appears on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site) enlisted at Pontefract and joined the 1st Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment and was given the service number 10198.
The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915, when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time that gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence.
John William Sinfield was killed in action aged 22 on 23rd April 1915 and his name is recorded on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. The www.roll-of-honour.com shows that he was a resident of Rotherham.
