War Service

William Blakey Roberts joined the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) as a private service number 305484. He died on 30th July 1918 and was buried at firstly at Chambry Communal Cemetery Extension. His grave was later transferred to Sissonne British Cemetery.
The village of Sissonne was in German hands during almost the whole of the 1914-1918 War. The British Cemetery was made after the Armistice by the concentration of graves from the nearby Chemin-des-Dames battlefield and from the other nearby smaller burial grounds including the Chambry Communal Cemetery Extension.

Family Life

William Blakey Roberts was born on 2nd August 1898, the son of John and Fanny Nightingale Roberts nee Blakey. They had married in the first quarter of 1889 and their marriage was registered at Bradford.
In the 1911 census he was shown as an Assistant in a Woollen warehouse, living in Leeds with his mother (now a widow) and two siblings.
